The Mystery at FOA
Pageant Writer Dan Duling Brings Orange County Noir
Event to the Festival of Arts on July 17
Laguna Beach, CA - The crime scene tape will be the first clue. You might even spot a DBO [dead body outline] near the exhibits. If you like your fiction a little dark and mysterious, the Festival of Arts has just the ticket: an afternoon with authors of the critically-acclaimed anthology Orange County Noir on July 17. This collection of criminally entertaining short stories edited by Gary Phillips and recently published by Akashic Books as part of their successful Noir series features 14 tales of mayhem and misdeeds all taking place in and around Orange County, including one, The Toll, set in Laguna Beach and written by veteran Pageant scriptwriter Dan Duling.*
Duling will host this gathering of authors whose works are also included in Orange County Noir, beginning at 3:00 p.m. on the Festival stage. A selection of short readings will be followed by a Q&A with the writers and a group book signing. Copies will be for sale in the Festival gift shop throughout the summer run.
Publishers Weekly gave the book a starred review, noting: There's a dark side to most places, even California's sunny Orange County, Edgar-winner T. Jefferson Parker observes in his foreword to this outstanding entry in Akashic's “Noir” series, one of the stronger of the all-original anthologies.
In addition to Laguna Beach, you’ll find stories set in such nearby locales as Los Alamitos, Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Balboa Island, and maybe even your own back yard. The rogue’s gallery of stellar authors who contributed stories includes Susan Straight, Robert S. Levinson, Rob Roberge, Nathan Walpow, Barbara DeMarco-Barrett, Mary Castillo, Lawrence Maddox, Dick Lochte, Robert Ward, Gary Phillips, Gordon McAlpine, Martin J. Smith, and Patricia McFall. Subject to availability, Duling hopes to have as many of the authors on hand at the Festival on the 17th as possible.
Bring along your books for signing and join the authors of Orange County Noir for an afternoon of murder, betrayal and twisted fun. To miss out would be a crime.
Pageant tickets cost $15-$100 (depending on seat location and night of the week); gala benefit performance on August 28, 2010 costs $50-$350. From July 7 through August 31, 2010, a Pageant of the Masters ticket also entitles you to free admission to The Festival of Arts – California’s Premier Fine Art Show (closed August 28 at 2 p.m. for a fundraising event). This summer’s Pageant ticket is more valuable than ever. It gives
the ticket holder an “all access” pass to many of the Festival of Arts special events.
The Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters are sponsored in part by Acura, Fidelity Investments, KOST Radio 103.5, the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel, the Orange County Register and COX Communications. The Festival of Arts is a non-profit organization that produces The Festival of Arts – California’s Premier Fine Art Show and the Pageant of the Masters.
