Festival Jury

Artwork being shown at our Physical Jurying held at the Boys and Girls Club of Laguna Beach.

This is a busy time of year at the Festival of Arts. Everyone is preparing and getting things ready for the summer. For the Exhibits Department our work begins the instant the previous summer ends by accepting applications from artists hoping to join the troves of successful artists who already show their works. Many of you might wonder what it takes to become a Festival Artist.

First an artist must be 18 years of age or older and live in one of the qualifying zip codes in Orange County. Only original artwork is accepted and all work must be of original design and solely the work of the artist.

The Festival of Arts is a juried art show and our jurying process is in two phases. The first phase is done with digital images of the works submitted. The second phase requires the artists to bring in three pieces of artwork for a physical jurying.

Each year artwork is juried by 3 artists and 3 jurors who work in the art industry or have an arts background. This year we are fortunate to have a fantastic group of jurors:

Scott Albert – Artist (watercolor)
Paul Bond – Artist (oils)
Sherry Salito-Forsent – Artist (glass)
Idurre Alonso – Researcher, The J. Paul Getty Museum
Kristina Colby – Program Coordinator, Arts Orange County
Kim Irvine – Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering
Troy Poeschl – Artist (sculpture) *Alternate Juror

To set up every applicant to succeed we offer a seminar each September that goes over the entire process and offers tips and tricks to help the artists best present their work to our jurors.

A total of 30% of the previous year’s exhibitors are juried out each season and these exhibitors have to re-jury to regain exhibitor status. After all of the jurying is done the scores are tabulated and the artists with the top scores are invited into the show.
