Performer: The Sea Monks

The Sea Monks have released three SDMA-nominated albums: New Dreams (2024), Lost Again (2021), and Gasoline (2018). New Dreams is a collaboration with San Diego’s Johnny Sapphire, recorded at Pacific Beat Recording with sound engineer Alan Sanderson (The Rolling Stones, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, B.B. King) and featuring the vocals of Josie Lavalle.

At the heart of the Sea Monks is front man Noah “The Flying Aardvark” Kapchinske, born with a love of rockabilly, blues, and outlaw country. Noah has spent years studying guitar with the great roots blues guitarist Robin Henkel and plays in The Go Heads as well. From The Man in Black to Dale Watson, Noah has learned from the best and is ready to play it forward.

Holding down the rhythm is drummer Kai Kapchinske, whose steady train beats and swampy syncopation keep the band grounded. Though younger than the rest, Kai’s feel for the groove is undeniable—and he sings too, adding even more soul to the Sea Monks’ sound.

On bass is Jason Kapchinske, who, when not working his 9-5 job, lives the dream of making music with his sons. After starting out on violin and dabbling with the mandolin, Jason picked up the bass when Noah and Kai said they needed someone to hit the low notes—and he’s been locking in with them ever since.
