This summer, the Pageant of the Masters’ Gold Coast: Treasures of California is transporting audiences on a journey through California’s rich artistic legacy. Recently, the Pageant welcomed a truly rare moment when the artist and the art became one.

Festival of Arts exhibitor Susan Hoehn, a Laguna Niguel resident, took to the stage as a featured cast member in the re-creation of her own work, “The Artist at LACMA,” making her Pageant debut not just behind the canvas, but inside it. As a living portrait of herself, Hoehn experienced firsthand what it’s like to be transformed and step into the spotlight. In this exclusive Q&A, Susan reflects on the surreal moment of stepping into her own painting, the camaraderie backstage, and what it truly means to become living art.

Q: What was it like seeing your own artwork re-created on stage for the Pageant, and then being able to step into the Pageant re-creation as yourself during a live show?

A: It was an extraordinary honor to see my paintings recreated on the Pageant stage, an experience I will always cherish. The level of artistry and precision demonstrated by the Pageant team in translating my work into large-scale compositions was so impressive. Sharing that moment for the first time with some of my Festival artist friends made it even more special. And then, stepping into the world of my own painting was unreal. It felt as though I had crossed into a dream – like Alice entering Wonderland!

Q: When you first learned that “The Artist at LACMA” would be featured in the Pageant, what went through your mind? What did it mean to have such not just one but three pieces selected for re-creation?

A: For years, I have been drawn to the theme of museum visitors engaging with art, capturing those contemplative moments through my paintings. “The Artist at LACMA” was a personal piece—created for fun, with the intention of including myself within the scene. I never imagined it would be selected by the Pageant of the Masters, let alone featured on the prominent banner at the entrance of the Festival of Arts venue. And as a current exhibiting artist at the Festival, I was thrilled to have three of my works chosen for this year’s Pageant. It was also gratifying to see two former festival exhibitors recognized alongside me. The Festival of Arts has always given artists access to a supportive community, providing artists with visibility, encouragement, and pathways to professional growth. I’m especially pleased to witness a growing connection between festival artists and the Pageant—a bridge that strengthens our shared artistic mission.

Q: Can you share a bit about your backstage experience? Did you get a chance to connect with any of the cast or volunteers?

A: The staff at the Pageant of the Masters were exceptional, providing clear guidance from my arrival backstage through my time on stage. I gained a deep appreciation for the complexity of the production—each volunteer plays a vital role in ensuring the show’s success. It was so much fun meeting the cast members who portrayed figures from my paintings and documenting the experience with photos. One cast member commented—“You created us!”—I think that captures the spirit of collaboration and artistic transformation that defines the Pageant.

Q: Were you given any tips or coaching before having to hold your pose on stage? What was going through your mind during those 90 seconds?

A: I was directed by the stage crew who meticulously checked my pose and instructed me on how to stay still and focus when on stage. They were great! However, knowing that this was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I managed to move a few fingers for the benefit of my three grandkids in the audience.

Q: What was your favorite part of the night overall, and if you had to sum up the entire experience in one word, what would it be and why?

A: I really didn’t know what to expect, it was so much fun to participate in such a unique and special production. Something that I never imagined I would be a part of. I can’t choose just one part of the night, it was all “Magical!!”

From stepping into her own work to sharing the stage with volunteers who brought her vision to life, Susan Hoehns’ journey from canvas to cast captured the very heart of what makes the Pageant of the Masters so unique.
