ARTIST STATEMENT
“Flameworking glass sculptor, I’ve transformed molten glass into this cohesive series exploring aerodynamic elegance. With torch and breath, I capture the power and beauty of modern machinery in delicate, luminous glass—forging strength from fragility.”
ARTIST BIO
Adam Whobrey, aka Hoobs, studied drawing and music as a child. He began flameworking glass in 2001, shortly after graduating high school. Adam started as a low-paid production craftsman for three years and pursued his own path independently after that apprenticeship ended.
His personal goals to master the craft came largely from self-teaching over the following years. He states that repetitive production and a new design or technique once a month pushed him to make things he’d never made before. Sculptural work was always the most fascinating to Adam and has been the focal point of his work for most of his career. His pieces are playful and entertaining, and his goal is to make the audience feel like a kid again.
His glass sneakers were the first design to resonate with a larger audience, garnering him global recognition, and to this day are staples of his work. While mainly showcasing and selling his work outside of the traditional fine-art scene, Adam has exhibited all around the U.S. and in many other countries, including Spain, Austria, England, and Canada.
With an ever-evolving catalog of work, Adam is in constant pursuit of achieving the highest level of craftsmanship in every piece he creates, connecting to his audience through relatable topics, universal experiences, and sometimes out-of-this-world ideas. He considers his art an ongoing expression of his life experiences, which is in constant change and progression, as is life.
