Mixed Media

“My paintings are the distillation of over 45 years in the creative side of the advertising industry as a freelance artist, art director, graphic and web designer. This background defines my approach to my art.””

Throughout Duncan’s formal education he majored in fine art and commercial art. A native of So. California since 1955, Duncan was raised in Pasadena and moved to La Jolla in 1969 where he owned and operated an art and gift store. It was during those years that he traveled the world. Duncan moved to Hawaii in 1979 and lived there through the 80’s, pursuing a career as a freelance artist and graphic designer specializing in communication arts.

While in Hawaii in the early ’90’s, Duncan released a series of original acrylic paintings on canvas and hand pulled, limited edition serigraphs. These images were exhibited in several one man shows and galleries in Honolulu. He returned to California in 1991.

In 1992 Duncan attended Platt College in Orange County, and received a degree in computer graphics and a certificate in web design in 2000. he has worked in all phases of the commercial creative process, developing advertising and marketing tools for in-house marketing departments, design studios, individual clients and advertising agencies in Hawaii and California.

In pursuit of a life long dream to be a fine artist, Duncan attended Mission Renaissance Fine Art Academy in 2002 where he studied sketching, composition, color theory, and different techniques of representational painting with oils on canvas. Upon completion of his studies he decided to employ his experience and design skills into original mixed media paintings.

From 2014 – 2016 Duncan took a break from painting to study music theory, songwriting and guitar at Saddleback College.
