“I’m constantly looking for scenes to paint that excite me. This usually turns out to be the way the sunlight hits an object and creates interesting patterns of light and shade. To create that onto a canvas is my passion.”
Jacobus Baas, born in the Netherlands, started painting while in high school and received a well grounded education in the creative process. In 1968, to provide some financial stability, he began to design and make jewelry and founded Jacobus Goldsmiths in Laguna Beach.
In 1994 Jacobus discovered plein air painting and started spending less time making jewelry. The inevitable result was painting full time by 1998.
Jacobus is a signature member of the Laguna Plein Air Association. He has won many awards over the years and was included in the Irvine Museum show “100 Years of Plein Air Painting.” He is represented by Pacific Edge Gallery in Laguna Beach. This will be his 45th year participating at the Festival of Arts this year.
