ARTIST STATEMENT

“My artwork explores the beauty of California’s ever-changing coastline. The ecosystem where land and water converge serves as an endless well of inspiration for my drawings and paintings.”

ARTIST BIO

Kayla Janes is a fine artist living and working in Laguna Beach, California. She received both her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Laguna College of Art and Design, where she developed a multidisciplinary practice rooted in observation.

Drawing continuous inspiration from the coastal landscape that surrounds her, Janes creates work that reflects her enduring fascination with the ocean. The rhythms, textures, and shifting tides of the shoreline serve as both subject and influence, informing her approach across a range of media. Her practice spans charcoal, oil painting, ceramics, and jewelry, allowing her to explore the same themes through varied visual languages.

Janes’ work often navigates the intersection between representation and abstraction, capturing not only the physical presence of coastal elements but also their atmospheric and emotional resonance. Through layered surfaces, tonal variation, and thoughtful composition, she seeks to evoke the sensory experience of the California coast.

Her work has been exhibited in galleries throughout Southern California, where she continues to engage with a vibrant community of artists and collectors. She is also a regular exhibitor at the Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Beach, a longstanding and celebrated venue that highlights locally rooted, hand-crafted work. Janes’ artwork is held in private collections throughout the United States and Europe.

In addition to her studio practice, Janes is an experienced educator who has taught at several colleges in the region, including Laguna College of Art and Design and Saddleback College. Through teaching, she shares her knowledge of traditional and contemporary techniques while encouraging students to develop their own artistic voices. Her dual role as artist and educator informs her practice, fostering a continual dialogue between making and learning.

Janes continues to live and work in Laguna Beach, where the surrounding landscape remains an integral part of her creative process. Her work reflects an ongoing exploration of color, environment, and observation – grounded in a deep appreciation for the natural world.
