ARTIST STATEMENT

“I create paintings rooted in nature, capturing its beauty through expressive color, gestural marks, and bold designs. Inspired by my outdoor experiences, I aim to evoke wonder and appreciation of the landscape’s natural grandeur.”

ARTIST BIO

Mason Williams (b. 1995) is a landscape painter and teacher from Carmel, California. Growing up surrounded by California Impressionists, he pursued a BA in Studio Art from Principia College (2017) and later attended an artist residency at Otis College of Art and Design (2018). He later began working for Carmel Visual Arts as a Studio Manager. During this time, Williams also began a painting mentorship with renowned Carmel artists Jesse Powell, John Burton, and Brian Blood, solidifying his passion for plein air painting. In 2022, he earned his MFA in Painting from Laguna College of Art and Design. Since then, Williams has shown his paintings in many museums, including the Bowers Museum, Hilbert Museum Laguna Art Museum, and the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum. Williams received the Landscape Award of Excellence from the Oil Painters of America Western Regional Exhibition in 2022 and the Gold Medal for Landscape at the 113th Annual California Art Club Gold Medal Exhibition in 2023. He has been featured in Southwest Art Magazine and American Art Collector Magazine. In 2024, he attended the Hudson River Fellowship, sponsored by the Grand Central Atelier. In 2025, Williams was invited to be a Faculty Field Painters at the Plein Air Convention and Expo in Reno. A dedicated educator, he teaches at Laguna College of Art and Design and Orange County School of the Arts. Williams also mentors young artists through the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.
