ARTIST STATEMENT

“Blending monochromatic realism with expressive marks and unexpected color, my mixed-media works explore the essence of diverse subjects. I create portraits that evoke emotion, reveal untold stories, and invite human connection.”

ARTIST BIO

Mika Denny is an award-winning figurative artist based in Southern California. Born and raised in Laguna Beach, Mika (pronounced Meeka) was awarded a 4-year scholarship from the Festival of Arts to pursue a creative arts degree. Her mixed-media portraits capture emotion and dramatic light, leaving the viewer wanting to know more about the subject. While her aesthetic leans toward realism, her approach retains an expressive style.

Mika’s work has juried into multiple national exhibitions including the American Women Artists Annual Museum Shows and the AAPL Grand National at the historic Salmagundi Club in New York City. She was a finalist in the Martha’s Vineyard Drawing Prize, the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts’ Women Artists Making Their Mark, and the Brand 50 and Brand 52 Annual National Juried Exhibitions of Works on Paper. Mika was also a Top Ten finalist for the prestigious Boynes Artist Award and semifinalist for the International ARC Salon Competition which qualified her work to be sent to the moon as part of the Lunar Codex project.

In addition, her work has been published in American Art Collector and the Best of Drawing issue of Artists Magazine. Recently, two of Mika’s portraits were acquired for the permanent collection at the Hilbert Museum of California Art.

Beyond her artistic accomplishments, Mika is an active member of the art community. She is a Signature member of American Women Artists (AWA), an Artist member of the California Art Club, and an Elected member of the American Artists Professional League. She is also a member of the Portrait Society of America and teaches online classes through the Kara Bullock Art School.
