ARTIST STATEMENT

“Admiration of traditional quilts, fabric design and nature’s beauty inspire my watercolor paintings. Blending imagery from very different sources into a cohesive whole is endlessly satisfying.”

ARTIST BIO

The Laguna Festival of Arts Junior Exhibit accepted Molly Hutchings’ first watercolor painting during her high school years.  The thrill of being included in the exhibition inspired her to continue creating art and then attend college as an art major.

Molly received her Fine Arts B.A., with distinction in printmaking, from Sonoma State University.  She then went on to become the first woman to complete a California certified apprenticeship in Art Metal Working while employed at the historic La Haye Bronze foundry in Sonoma.

After a period of experimentation with watercolor and developing her unique “watercolor quilt” style, Molly was juried into the Laguna Festival of Arts.  She has continued to exhibit each summer at the festival for over thirty years.

Echoing the process that selected Molly’s painting back in high school, Molly has the honor years later to help select the work of young artists for the current Junior Exhibits.  Her artistic journey has come full circle.
