Roger Kuntz was born in San Antonio, Texas, and was regarded as a kind of Renaissance man because of his many interests. A painter, sculptor, fisherman, craftsman, teacher, and jazz musician, he excelled at all with enthusiasm. He was educated at Pomona College with a Bachelor of Arts, and graduate studies at Claremont Graduate School with an MFA. He received many awards throughout his career, both on the national and international levels. In 1963 he moved from Claremont to Laguna Beach, where he taught at the Laguna Beach School of Art & Design. His most critically acclaimed series was in 1959, when he created a series based on the study of abstract values of the Los Angeles highways, bridges, and road signs.
