ARTIST STATEMENT

“Each moment I paint from life is like a fingerprint, unique from every other moment. I want my work to capture the essence of the place, to share the story of the moment with others.”

ARTIST BIO

Dawn Buckingham follows the tradition of American Impressionism by immersing herself in the natural landscape, as a plein air artist, in order to capture the light, color and mood of the area. The need to work quickly in the changing light is reflected in the energy of her mark marking and subtle layers of pigment. The landscape is usually the focus of her work but the inclusion of structures, vehicles, and figures provide the context how we live and impact the environment. Plein air paintings inform her studio practice in both oil and soft pastel.

Dawn feels that becoming an artist has given her the gift of seeing and experiencing the world in a new and enhanced way. She believes that the arts have a major role to play as a tool for raising awareness of the effects of global warming and the consequences of human activity on our planet. “My growth as an artist is a journey of personal expression, appreciating moments in time, and sharing my joy of painting with others through teaching.”

Dawn is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of Colorado and is actively involved with Laguna Plein Air Painters LPAPA, Southern California Plein Air Painters SOCALPAPA, Plein Air Artists Colorado, and the Pastel Society of the West Coast. Her work has been recognized with awards in both local and juried national shows, plein air competitions and quick draw events. Her students and collectors include both US and International patrons. Her work is currently displayed at Studio 7 Gallery in Laguna Beach.
