ARTIST STATEMENT
“I paint using only a palette knife due to the unique texture and movement it gives to the work. Generally, it’s beautiful lighting that catches my attention and makes me want to capture it.”
ARTIST BIO
Elaine Hughes’ oil paintings are fluid and alive with movement due to her working exclusively with a palette knife. She paints the smallest detail to the broadest stroke with the same one knife that she’s been using for approximately 15 years. Her evocative work captures the beauty, joy, nostalgia, and struggle of the human condition. She always has her camera with her and will take reference photos of any subject that has captivating lighting.
Elaine began her career as a professional artist in 1996, selling her work in Bluebird Gallery in Laguna Beach, CA. She was represented by the gallery from 1996 until their closing in 2016. Elaine has also shown in her work in Lahaina Gallery in Newport Beach, Li-Ying Gallery in Laguna Beach CA, Chemers Gallery in Tustin CA and Highland’s Art Gallery in Chester, New Jersey. Besides art galleries, Elaine has participated in many art shows and festivals including La Quinta Arts Festival, Sausalito Art Festival, Bellevue Festival of the Arts, Los Altos Arts Festival, Laguna Beach Art-A-Fair, Beverly HIlls artShow and Indian Wells Arts Festival.
