ARTIST STATEMENT

“My love and admiration of Asian culture and art is the most significant influence on my work. Harmony. Serenity. Quiet energy. I strive to inspire these feelings through the unexpected combination of ancient Asian papers in a contemporary format.”

ARTIST BIO

Mia was raised in the Pacific Northwest and moved to California to pursue a Bachelors Degree in studio art with an emphasis in printmaking.  She later studied design at the University of Copenhagen and architecture at the University of Irvine. Fascinated with paper from the beginning Mia has been working in mixed media for over 30 years.

Mia is drawn to the individual stories told by the delicate and fragile texture of vintage Asian  paper.  Her passion is to reveal narratives of surprise and delight by melding textures of old and new paper highlighted by varied combinations and layers of acrylic paint, stain and gold leaf.

Mia frequently travels to Asia to hunt for materials that can be included in the collage process.  She appreciates working with paper produced in the developing world where chemicals and non-human energy are not used in the production process. The influence of Asia has kindled her interest in the cultures of Asia and greatly influenced her sense of design.

Mia has exhibited her works at the Laguna Beach Festival of Arts since 1994 and at other venues in the West.  Her work has been collected by many public, private and corporate clients around the world.
