ARTIST STATEMENT

“The adage, ‘Cherishing old knowledge, acquiring the new,’ gave me the inspiration to bring artistic uniqueness and innovation to the idiom of textile/fabric design.”

ARTIST BIO

Sachiko Sukegawa was born in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. She majored in fine arts at colleges and design centers in Japan and the United States and has worked as a textile/fabric designer and graphic artist for over 30 years. With her additional professional background in photography and commercial printing she is a commissioned commercial designer for corporate events and exhibitions.

Her textile/fabric design concepts are influenced by the Japanese philosophy of Wabi Sabi – “The elegance in design through tranquility and simplicity.” The objective is to represent serenity and harmony through color, dimension, and line. From this perspective, she produces works that influence personal reflection and cultural unity. The designs are created using vintage Kimono fabrics and accessories, and they range in age from eighty (80) to over one hundred (100+) years old. The construction techniques utilize aspects of the 280-year history of the Edo Kimekomi Doll garmenting process.

Ms. Sukegawa’s artistic works have consistently won acclaim by the Nikaten Graphic Competition in Roppongi, Japan and have been featured at the National Art Center in Tokyo.
