From the 2016 script for the Pageant of the Masters “PARTNERS” written by Dan Duling

This is the EXACT script for the Pageant narrator for “The Kiss on the Hand.” This particular piece was one that we call a “builder.” It is one of the presentations where we show the audience exactly how we “build” the set and get it ready to present on stage as part of the show.

For our two cast members, their moment onstage has arrived, as we see how we put together our next living picture, an Italian painting from 1877.

With our adjustable frame moved downstage, we can now bring in the first of two rolling wagon sets. Two cast members have already taken their places as these two stages slide together like puzzle pieces. As always, everyone is safely secured in place.

Nineteenth century Italian artist Gerolamo Induno lived in Milan where he won acclaim for his meticulously-detailed paintings of everyday life.

With the foreground moved into its final placement in the frame, the background can be flown in.

And now it’s time for our star-crossed couple to make their grand entrance and be helped into the set by the crew.

It’s important to remember it used to be a good thing to travel in coach…

Now our young signorina is helped with the drapery of her gown. At the same time, our senior receives his hat from another crew member. Careful attention is paid to their poses, getting all the details perfect to create the right impression. Meanwhile, the frame is adjusted to its proper dimensions and the side curtains are dressed.

And now the moment we’ve been waiting for. With everything and everyone in place, he takes her hand…and the stage goes dark for a moment.

And now, with proper stage lighting, love takes its own sweet time, gently nudged along by “The Kiss on the Hand.
